Project description

Digital twins and new types of interaction technologies such as mixed reality offer the potential in industrial applications to support human experts in a targeted manner and thus optimise processes. In process technology, both concepts are still in their early stages. Reasons include the need for evolutionary capability of digital twins, special requirements when using devices in the field, and the heterogeneous database. The research project addresses this research gap and investigates the use of AR/VR in interaction with digital twins to enable a new kind of human-centred evolution in the field. For this purpose, existing technologies are investigated and further developed. Furthermore, an information model for mapping relevant data is being developed. A platform unifies the approaches and connects digital twins and experts in the field. The approaches developed will be evaluated at an early stage using practical application scenarios.

Time Leap Investigation (T.L.I)

Project description

The project is based around the principle of transmedia storytelling and a change in perspective when using virtual reality (VR) technologies. The goal is to create an immersive experience that challenges players of T.L.I. with their own perspectives instead of immersing themselves exclusively as the protagonist, which has been typical for VR games so far.

When a player takes off the VR glasses in the storyline, the protagonist takes control of an android in a past timeline. The person playing thus becomes an android in the real environment and collects information in a fictional reality.

In the sense of transmedia storytelling, a virtual reality with Apps and browser applications is created that accompanies players as they remove their VR glasses. The immersive character of this cross-media gaming experience can be rounded off by an entirely voice-controlled dialogue system in VR which allows for total player immersion into the game world's narrative.

Content

In a not too far away future, the players control the protagonist Ethan Wades in virtual reality (VR), a former member of a cyberterrorism special unit who is in a wheelchair and suffers from amnesia after an unsolved assassination attempt. In an attempt to solve the crime surrounding his person, the protagonist finds a way to obtain information from the past by means of time travel and android technologies. Based on this, he founds the special unit "Time Leap Investigation (T.L.I.)", which gives the game its name.

Mission Impossible

Development of a Blended Learning Simulation Game to promote Tolerance of Ambiguity in the Context of Entrepreneurship Education

Research Programme

Duration

2020 to 2022

Research Partner

straightlabs GmbH & Co. KG

Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen Institute for Family Business

Content

The "Mission Impossible" project at Zeppelin University, led by Dr. Laura Bechthold, is focused on the development of game-based approaches to promote tolerance of ambiguity (dealing with uncertainty and complexity). The aim of the project is to develop digital, text-based simulation games that confront players with increasingly complex decision-making situations regarding the strategic orientation of a fictitious company over several levels. For use in university courses, the game will be embedded in various interactive elements, exercises and micro-learning units that convey background knowledge about the decision-making situations and solution strategies. In this way, the game becomes a multimedia learning experience. The straightlabs platform forms the interface between the game and the learning units. The students are guided through the learning experience via the straightlabs platform, where they can work on the micro-learning units, record reflections on the game experience and reflect on what they have learned. The project is currently in the development phase. A first prototype is expected at the end of 2021.
